Marble Arch may not be one of the most popular places in London, yet it’s worth visiting if you are staying nearby. It is a XIXth century white marble- faced triumphal arch which was designed by John Nash to be the state entrance to the cour d'honneur of Buckingham Palace. In 1851 the arch was moved to its current site at the northeast corner of Hyde Park. The true intention of moving this arch is unknown since some stories say it was moved because it was too narrow to pass through, others claim that Queen Victoria requested more personal space for her family. Historically, only members of the Royal Family, the King's Troop and Royal Horse Artillery are permitted to pass through the arch and this happens only in a few occasions, such as ceremonial processions.
At the moment it stands at the crossing of Oxford Street, Park Lane, and Edgware Road, almost directly opposite Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park in the City of Westminster, so you can go sightseeing in these places as well.
